According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, approximately one in five households in the United States — that’s more than 21 million homes — relies on an onsite septic system rather than a municipal sewer connection. In North Georgia, that number is even higher. The rural and semi-rural landscapes around Cartersville, Cherokee County, Bartow County, and the outer Atlanta suburbs mean that septic systems are the norm for a significant portion of homeowners in our service area.
The striking part is that the majority of these homeowners have never been given a basic explanation of how their system works. A septic system is not a holding tank that gets pumped when full. It is an active biological treatment system. Wastewater flows from the house into the tank, where solids settle to the bottom as sludge and lighter materials float as scum. The liquid layer in the middle — called effluent — flows out to the drain field, where it percolates through the soil and is naturally filtered before reaching groundwater.

2. The Recommended Pumping Interval Is Every 3 to 5 Years — Most People Wait Far Longer
The EPA recommends that the average residential septic tank be pumped every three to five years. When sludge buildup exceeds about one-third of the tank’s capacity, solids begin escaping into the drain field — which is expensive to repair and, in some cases, requires complete replacement.

3. “Flushable” Wipes Are One of the Leading Causes of Septic System Problems
The label says flushable. The septic system disagrees.
Flushable wipes — along with paper towels, feminine hygiene products, dental floss, cotton swabs, and a long list of other commonly flushed items — do not break down in a septic system the way toilet paper does. Toilet paper is specifically engineered to disintegrate rapidly in water. Most other paper and woven products are not. They accumulate in the tank, in the inlet baffle, and in the drain line, creating blockages that require professional intervention to clear.
A widely cited study found that none of the 101 wipe products tested — including those labeled “flushable” — fully disintegrated under the conditions simulating a real sewer or septic system environment. In municipal wastewater treatment systems, so-called flushable wipes are estimated to contribute to 75% of all sewer blockages in some cities. In a residential septic system, the damage is more localized but equally disruptive.

Everything else — regardless of what the packaging says — goes in the trash. This single habit change extends the life of your tank, reduces the risk of clogs, and keeps your drain lines clear. 4. A Failing Septic System Is an Environmental Hazard, Not Just a Plumbing Problem
Here’s the statistic that tends to get attention: the EPA estimates that between 10 and 15 percent of all septic systems in the United States are failing or operating at substandard levels at any given time. In Georgia, the combination of clay-heavy soils in many areas, aging systems installed decades ago before modern standards, and the rapid suburban expansion around Atlanta means that failing systems are not an abstract concern.
A failing septic system doesn’t just create nuisance conditions like odors or wet spots in the yard. Houseguests and increased household activity dramatically increase water usage. A system sized for a family of four receiving a weeklong family visit with six additional people can process nearly double its normal daily load. The EPA estimates that the average American uses 70 to 100 gallons of water per day. Add summer visitors, more frequent showers after outdoor activity, extra laundry loads, and additional dishwasher cycles, and it adds up fast.
High summer temperatures accelerate bacterial activity in the tank — which sounds positive, but in an already stressed system it can disrupt the delicate biological balance that makes the system work. High temperatures also mean the soil surrounding the drain field is warmer and drier, which can affect how efficiently effluent percolates.
Meanwhile, summer is also when people use more outdoor water — irrigation, car washing, filling pools — and any significant grading or soil disturbance in the yard (landscaping projects, garden installations) can inadvertently affect the drain field area if homeowners don’t know where it’s located.
The practical implication: if your system is due for service, July is the right month. Don’t wait until you’re hosting a Fourth of July cookout and discover the drain field can’t handle it.
