Are Your Pipes Talking to You?

A residential house in suburbs.

Though not with actual words, your plumbing system can audibly communicate with you. In fact, it is common for customers to call with complaints that their pipes, faucets or other septic system components are making unusual sounds or strange noises. While it is always a good idea to let a professional take a look, you can get a basic idea to what is going on by listening closely to the distinct sound that is coming from behind your walls or below your floor.

Plumbing sounds don’t always mean a plumbing problem or urgent repair. Determining whether your plumbing sound occurs when the water is on (inlet side) or when the water is draining can provide the first set of clues to your problem. In general, there are certain sounds that indicate certain plumbing issues. Here’s what you may have going on if you experience the following types of sounds:

Hissing
If your faucet is slightly open and you hear a hissing sound, you likely have too much water pressure. Consider following up with your local water company or installing a pressure reducing valve.
Thudding
Thudding sounds are often associated with a shuddering of pipes when your faucet or appliance is turned off. This is referred to as “water hammer.” These are vibrations of water pressure that is suddenly halted, indicating a restriction in the pipe or valve issue. Air chamber and shock absorber fittings are one way to solve water hammer.
Chattering or Screeching
There’s nothing more disruptive than hearing persistent screeching or chattering from your plumping when you are trying to sleep or rest in your home. It often signals loose or defective internal parts, which may require a replacement valve. Another culprit to plumbing chattering is from washing machines and dishwashers that are improperly connected.

How to Avoid Drain Pipe Noise

Drain pipes are known for producing noise. This can be remedied by better insulating the pipes (using fiberglass) or removing any surfaces that can be struck by rushing water. In addition, you can opt for water-saving toilets and faucets, as these new models are less noisy than older designs.

If you are concerned about a new or louder sound coming from septic system, call Metro Septic in Cartersville for help. By listening to your pipes, faucets and drains, you may be able to save yourself from a costly septic disaster.
