All septic tanks are not created equal. An Aerobic Treatment System (ATS) works differently than a traditional septic system. Aerobic systems treat your wastewater by pumping oxygen into the tank, which naturally increases bacterial consumption of the waste within the system. There are certain situations in which an aerobic septic system is preferred over a conventional system, especially if you have a small or challenging lot or poor soil quality.
Here are some specific advantages of an aerobic treatment system:
- Less chance of groundwater contamination. Aerobic systems can provide a higher level of treatment within the actual system. Compared to a standard system, the treated water is cleaner in an aerobic system by the time it reaches the absorption field. A standard system, however, relies on the drainfield to further treat the wastewater.
- Effective on poor soil quality. A standard septic system may not work efficiently on a property that has rocky or clay soil. However, since an aerobic system carries out its tasks before it reaches the soil or absorption field, suitable soil is not necessarily required.
- Ideal for challenging lots. Property owners that don’t want to cut down mature trees or have a pool or deck that is restricting access should consider an aerobic system rather than a conventional septic tank. In general, aerobic tanks are simply more flexible and can accommodate setback requirements.
- Environmentally friendly. If you want to “go green” with your septic system, an aerobic treatment system is the way to go. With this type of system, the water that you discard from your home can be cleaned and recycled to water your lawn. Your sprinklers can be connected to your aerobic septic system!
While these advantages are highly valuable for the right client, it is important to know that aerobic systems do require diligent maintenance. They are considered more complex than conventional septic systems. In general, you’ll need to have your aerobic system inspected about every four months.
