How to Make Your Septic System More Eco-Friendly

If preserving the environment is important to you, you are likely to make daily eco-conscious decisions like recycling or composting. What you may not know, however, is that there are ways to also make your septic system more environmentally friendly. What goes into your septic tank eventually comes out in the ground. Therefore, the way you use and maintain your septic tank can make a significant difference in ground pollution.

If you want to ensure your septic system is eco-friendly, consider the following steps:

Regular Inspection and Pumping
As a septic owner, you must know what your tank requires in terms of frequency of septic pumping. Not pumping your tank on time could cause damage to your system as well as pollution of groundwater due to the overflow of the tank. Wastewater can also leach into the nearby ground if your tank is not functioning properly. Fortunately, this can be detected during a regular septic inspection.
Only Flushing Non-Biodegradable Items
If you are sending non-biodegradable items down your drains, your septic system is at high risk for clogs. Eventually, these clogs can cause a backup in your home and pollution of ground water in your property’s drain field. Avoid flushing paper towels, feminine hygiene products, grease/fats, cat litter, coffee grounds and even toilet paper that is not deemed “septic safe”.
Also, keep in mind that large amounts of food scraps in your septic tank can not only clog the pipes but also disrupt the natural bacterial balance due to the increase in phosphorus and nitrogen.
Water Conservation
Excess water in your tank can cause the tank to fill too quickly. Therefore, cutting back on your home water usage can not only lower your monthly bills and conserve water, it can also prevent damage to your septic system and prevent overflows that would otherwise pollute the environment. Water conservation habits are as simple as using energy-saving dishwashers and washing machines as well as limiting your time in the shower or turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
